Invisalign certainly seems like the perfect answer to cumbersome metal braces. They’re clear so your smile still takes center stage in photos, removable for easy cleaning and eating, and more comfortable in general. In many ways, they are a best-fit solution for many people.

However, that’s not to say they don’t come with some quirks! Here are four things you should know about Invisalign.

#1. You’ll Have to Wear Them Almost Constantly

To straighten your teeth effectively, you have to wear Invisalign aligners for 20 – 22 hours each day. Removing them for longer than a few minutes at a time could very well prolong your treatment and slow your progress. Because of that, you can expect to be doing some math to determine appropriate times for eating and brushing.

#2. Your Diet Could Look Quite Different

The ideal Invisalign diet consists of foods that don’t stick to your teeth or cause staining. No, you won’t be in danger of breaking a brace on a kernel of popcorn. But if it’s stuck to your teeth, it’ll stick to your aligners! That goes for strong pigments, too. Coffee, berries, and curry name a few things that could muddy your trays.

You can mitigate these risks – as long as you keep diligent habits. Rinsing your mouth with warm water after you eat or drink will help dislodge food particles and colors, while flossing can ensure debris isn’t hiding between your pearly whites.

#3. Adjustments Come with Discomfort

Another way your menu options might be limited at times is when you receive a new set of trays. After you receive your initial set, you’ll have to switch to tighter fits to keep up with the straightening process. This usually makes teeth pretty tender. Softer foods will help you get by until your mouth adjusts, and over-the-counter pain relievers effectively soothe orthodontic aches.

#4. Follow-Ups Are a Must!

Even if new trays are delivered straight to your door, your dentist will want to keep tabs on your progress. Attending these checkups is in your best interest! They allow your dentist to see whether your Invisalign plan is going smoothly, or whether your schedule or trays need tweaking to deliver good results.

Make no mistake, Invisalign is a fantastic orthodontic solution. But if you don’t know what to expect, you can’t make an informed decision. And you definitely can’t prepare properly for your new aligners! With that in mind, be sure to schedule a consultation with your dentist before you commit to Invisalign. They can answer your questions and will gladly help you determine if this treatment is a good fit for you and your unique preferences.
