What is Restorative Dentistry?
Restorative Dentistry is a division of dentistry focused on replacing missing or damaged teeth. During restorative dental treatments, our dentist primarily removes and repairs cavities and provides a treatment plan to improve your oral health. Restorative dentistry also focuses on treating patients who need dental repairs due to trauma to the mouth or sporting injuries.
Our Restorative Dental Treatments:
Our dentist provides restorative dental treatments at every stage of life, including for children, teens, adults, and seniors. We provide the following treatments at our dental office in Bedford, TX.
Inlays and Onlays are minor restorative procedures. This treatment is used when your tooth has experienced too much damage to support a basic filling, but not enough damage that a crown is necessary.
The key difference between Inlays and Onlays is the amount and part of the tooth that is repaired. An inlay will incorporate the pits and fissures of a tooth, mainly encompassing the chewing surface between the cusps. An onlay will involve one or more cusps being covered. If all cusps and the entire surface of the tooth are covered this is then known as a dental crown.
Dental crowns, also known as caps, can be used to replace damaged or worn teeth. If you have a cracked/broken tooth causing severe pain, our dentist can make a temporary crown to protect the chipped or damaged tooth while the permanent one is being made. Permanent crowns can last between 5 to 15 years depending on how well they are cared for. Crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes to restore discolored teeth back to their original color.
Dental bridges literally “bridge the gap” created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants. Dental bridges can last at least five to seven years. With good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings, the bridge may last more than 10 years.
Dentures are a tooth replacement option for patients who are missing all or many of their teeth. Full dentures are used to replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw, and partial dentures are used when the patient still has some of their natural teeth.
While conventional dentures fit directly over the gums, another option is implant-supported dentures, which attach to several metal posts that have been implanted in your jaw bone. Both types of dentures can be removed and cleaned each night, and then placed back into your mouth the following morning.
Dental implants are our preferred choice for replacing missing or lost teeth! A simple dental implant consists of a metal screw that is inserted into the jaw bone, along with a visible crown portion of the tooth that attaches to the screw. Specialized implants can also support a denture or partial denture, providing a more stable alternative to conventional dentures.
Dental implants help prevent many of the problems that can occur when a missing tooth is left unaddressed. Once you have healed from dental implant surgery, your implanted tooth will look just like a natural tooth, and you can care for it just as you would a natural tooth with daily brushing and flossing.
